History

The history of Santamarina and Steta is written hand in hand with our clients and modern Mexico. For more than seven decades we have been protagonists of the industrialization, commercial opening and economic and technological development of the country. Yesterday, today and always we are Santamarina and Steta.

1946

With the help of Bady Cole and Henry Holland of Baker & Botts, Bill Ryan and Dillon Anderson take the initiative to open an office in Mexico, with Fausto Miranda as the first Mexican partner.

1947

Our first offices were located in Reforma, where the Barceló Hotel is located today.

1948

Baker, Botts, Andrews and Miranda is officially founded.

1949

Juan Mario Steta, as an intern, and Agustín Santamarina, as a recently graduated lawyer, joined the Firm. The Firm played an active role in the industrialization process of Mexico, and its main practice was mining law.

1951

Eduardo Prieto López, vice president and lawyer of the mining company Cananea, then owned by the United States, joined as a partner. Four years later, he retired after being appointed General Manager of the company. He later developed his own copper processing company and founded the Industrial Club.

1954

With the departure of Mr. Prieto and the death of Mr. Andrews, the name of the Firm changes to Baker, Botts and Miranda.

1956

Juan M. Steta and Agustín Santamarina are invited to become partners.

1957

The Firm moves to its new office located at Reforma 76.

1965

The Firm changed its name to Baker, Botts, Miranda, Santamarina and Steta.

1973

Due to the nationalist movement promoted by President Echeverría's government, the separation with Baker & Botts was decided. That same year, Fausto Miranda retired from the Firm, giving rise to the creation of Santamarina y Steta.

1986

Santamarina y Steta moves to its current offices in Torre Omega.

1990

The firm was actively involved in the privatization of Telmex, the NAFTA agreements and the purchase and sale of Mexicana de Cananea. Jorge Barrero becomes the leader of the new Santamarina y Steta office in Monterrey.

1992

Mr. Agustín Santamarina and Juan Steta retire from the Firm.

2014

José Ramón Ayala heads the opening of the Querétaro office.

2022

Santamarina y Steta celebrated 75 years of formation, consolidation, solidity and prestige.
