Water is a vital resource that cannot be substituted. Any use or alteration implies an impact on the entire ecosystem. Among the Mexican government’s measures to safeguard this resource are a series of regulations and authorities whose purpose is to allow responsible exploitation, guarantee access to all people, and ensure that future generations will also have available water resources.

Mexico currently has approximately 11,122 km of coastline, 15,000 km2 of lagoons, and 29,000 km2 of inland water bodies, which together form a diverse variety of aquatic ecosystems. However, only 58% of the Mexican population has daily access to water at home, with extreme cases like Guerrero where only 10% of the population receives drinking water regularly.
